
Londoners stand very close to each other in a queue.

Here they are again standing very close in Tesco.
They’re rather an impatient lot and they probably think that standing closer to each other will make the queue shorter and therefore faster.

They also side step a lot and look stern.

They do it to ensure nobody pushes in. I have seen it done before in themeparks.

You may indeed be right Gary Wood, although your analogy with theme parks makes me also think that, like schoolchildren awaiting to ride the roller coaster, Londoners are very excited when they buy things.
They just don’t like showing it with their face.
